While there's always been a number of wonderful places to stay in Palm Springs, up at Joshua Tree, not so much. Texan transplant Blake Simpson appears committed to changing this. He's remodelled and crafted a classic 1950s motel by hand over a decade, with the occasional helping hand of a talented crew of LA design-royalty friends. But LA-bling it's certainly not, with a laid-back desert ethos, interesting upcycled decor, all solar power and most food sourced from a communal kitchen garden.
